Meet the Instructor
Name: Blair Bates
Blair brings over 10 years of professional leatherworking experience to ROCKING B5 LEATHER. Focusing primarily on traditional techniques, he specializes in building horse tack—including design, tooling, custom swivel knife carving, stamping, hardware installation, and finishing. His work is specially geared toward supporting the needs of the cowboy and cowgirl community. Blair's hands-on courses guide students through the complete leathercraft process, leaving them with practical knowledge and high-quality items they can be proud of.
Background
Blair and his wife, Brenda, have lived and worked across Western Canada. Raised in Kelowna, BC, Blair met Brenda in Regina, SK, while attending college. After finishing their studies, they raised their family in the Okanagan, with a few years on the West Coast and a short time in Edmonton.
They later moved to Manitoba to be closer to family. Ten years and a few grandkids later, the desire to stay close to their children brought them to a small acreage in the Moose Mountain region of Southeast Saskatchewan, where they proudly call home. They enjoy riding their horses, helping their kids work with their herds, and spending time as the in-house babysitters for their grandchildren, and traveling to Alberta and back to the Okanagan to see the rest of the family.
Teaching Style
Blair’s classes are hands-on and approachable. They focus on clear, step-by-step instruction, emphasizing fundamentals so students gain the confidence to tackle more advanced projects. Blair encourages questions, offers personalized feedback, and demonstrates practical problem-solving techniques that make complex tasks manageable.
